Early Adopters Pick: January 2003. The world's only end-to-end voice Internet service that uses traditional phones to make and complete calls.

The Vonage DigitalVoice Service package contains everything you need to quickly and easily install a phone line in your home. In a matter of minutes, your Vonage DigitalVoice phone can be up and running, and you can be making and receiving calls over your broadband connection to and from your friends, business associates, and faraway relatives. It's easy: just plug the included phone adapter into your high-speed Internet connection and plug your telephone into the adapter.

Enjoy the conveniences of a standard telephone service with none of the hassles. With Vonage DigitalVoice, you can talk all you want to anywhere in the country for one flat monthly subscription fee. Plus, you can make international calls at a low per-minute rate. Another bonus is that a U.S. call to Canada is treated like a domestic long distance call rather than an international one. Vonage also supports short-form emergency 911 services, where available.

Unlike other Internet telephone service providers, Vonage does not require access numbers, account numbers, or PINs to make a simple phone call. Instead, you just dial your party's phone number on an ordinary telephone keypad. Also, if you purchase DigitalVoice from , the box includes a special URL that lets you register for service without a setup fee, plus you get two months of free calling. Switching your current local phone service to Vonage is a snap. You can even choose any area code you want, subject to availability.

ok for some people2009-11-133 / 5
Vonage is ok. I have had it for about 5-6 years and the best part is I can take it with me if I move, without calling them or anything. The only thing you have to do, or should do, is let them know your 911 address is different. Certainly easier than dealing with a standard phone company.

The call quality is ok. Sometimes calls drop, depending on your online connection. Voice mail is nice since you can get the messages emailed to you.

Now that everything is going to wireless, there is not as much need for something like Vonage as there once was. It's cheaper than wireless though, so if you like the idea of a "home" phone, it may be a good option for you. Last time I checked, it won't work with services like ADT, so you may end up having to keep your landline anyway.

Some people have complained about customer service. For me, it was ok. I have only called about a router issue. The call went overseas, which presented some issues, but the people were friendly and tried to help.

Overall, it does what I need, which is give me basic phone service.
Dishonest by omission!2009-08-281 / 5
I just cancelled vonage after a year and a half with them. I do not use my home phone and did not need it any longer. They cancelled the service and went on to explain that they would need to charge a $39.99 termination fee because I was cancelling less than 2 years. I pointed out that their terms of service of their website states that termination fees would only be charged for accounts cancelled before one year of service. They said that was only for accounts after May 2009 (although it says nothing about that in the terms of service). Ridiculous!
The service was lousy and the support was even more lousy2009-01-241 / 5
I bought vonage service from them directly. It came after 7 days and got the service connected. The service was really bad. Had lot of static and basically the call quality was lousy. I thought it could be some bad bandwidth problems. I waited and finally couldnt use it any more. So I disconnected the service and they slapped me with a 40 dollar fee and 80 dollar equipment fee for a refurbished modem.I called them and rep didnt have any answers and I asked for the supervisor and apparently they are in a meeting on saturday morning. I requested them to call back. Have to see what the supervisor says.
Phone service is poor, customer service is untruthful2008-05-221 / 5
Unfortunately what you are told by customer service and what the 100 pages of terms of service tell you are different, and if you arent careful, it'll cost you an extra $100.

The whole time I had this service I experienced:

- Dropped calls
- Feedback on the line
- Clicks and taps on the line
- Repeated outages

I am really disappointed in the service, but it was cheap to use until I cancelled and the customer service rep told me it would be almost $100 to cancel. When I signed up, I was told it was month to month with no cancellation fees. Vonage told me that in the terms of service, cancellation fees are plainly outlined... on section 8.6 on page 18 of a 100 page terms of service. Technically my fault, ethically Vonage has some work to do.

I hate to bring this up but the only time you can get a native english speaking person on the phone is when you want to cancel service, the rest of the time you speak with someone you can barely hear or understand.

Overall, great concept, poor example.
A criminal company-Avoid!2008-01-261 / 5
Look at the number of 1 ratings and beware. This is a truly criminal company with mean-spirited approaches to sucking away your money. I had the same experience where they started billing me for service weeks before their equipment even arrived! This is criminal! Their customer service is the rudest bunch of human beings on this planet. Vonage also does not explain how you have to contact your previous phone company and explain the situation of phone transferring. This was the worst learning experience about a poorly run company I have ever had. Can you cancel on their website? of course not! After you finally drill down to Canceling your account on the phone, they ask questions why and then put you on hold for an hour when you say they can't talk you out of it! Criminal. Spell it--CRIMINAL!
I've sent everything back. When the dust clears and the fees are evaluated, you don't even save that much anyway, and it does drop and hopefully, the world will come around and stop supporting such poorly run companies as Vonage.
