I ordered this item when I upgraded the hard drive in my laptop. I used it to image the current computer hard drive onto a new hard drive. For that purpose the product did what it was supposed to do.
I originally ordered this in March of 2009.
I've only used the enclosure with the drive several times in the year and a half that I've owned it.
August of 2010 I pulled the enclosure out of a drawer to use in and discovered that the mini USB connector had fallen off the internal pc board of the unit.
In effect this makes the enclosure useless.
I contacted StarTech customer service and was informed I was out of luck because it's over 1 year since purchase.
Pros
- It lined up and plugged right into the hard drive
- Case seems sturdy and solid
- Drive was recognized right away in Win Vista
Cons
- Connections on internal board can fail
- Small screws for endcap (comes with a small micro screwdriver luckily.)
- Dual USB plugs (it can take two of your ports if both are needed.)
Gets Heated (2 Stars) - It does get warm, but it's a drive enclosure with no vents.
Overall I wouldn't recommend this product. It comes close to doing what it's supposed to. It's disapointing that product quality doesn't matter after warranty period expires. |
| Not Suited for 12mm Height Hard Drives | 2010-07-24 | 1 / 5 |

| I bought this for my Toshiba 12mm 500GB Hard Drive, but after getting the product realized that it only fits 9.7mm drives. Anyway i am using the adapter though without the casing, only after failing to jam my had drive into the aluminum casing (STUPIDITY). |

| you cant just plug it in. the hard drive has to be formatted first (at least all the ones i tried) which means losing all the data on them. i found this very annoying which is why i dont really like this enclosure. |

| I used mine for a laptop upgrade of my hard drive. Works perfectly, even with my new solid state drive. |
| Good, inexpensive way to extract files from hard drive. | 2010-05-28 | 5 / 5 |

| This product worked perfectly. I am not close to being a techie, but I was easily able to recover and save my valuable files from the hard drive of a dead Dell laptop. (Most computer services will charge over $100 for this.) By the way, Dell was miserable to work with (and expensive) in wasting my time and failing to diagnose and repair the relatively new Inspiron laptop I am now planning to ritually (and safely) defenestrate. Go with Apple. |
