I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 - a 4-5 year old laptop. Works perfectly fine as my second laptop and it's been running slow and hot. I bought this RAM chip to help multitasking and it's made a real difference. It's a little investment that can make big impact. I can switch between windows faster, there's less paging which means my hard drive isn't trying to burn my lap. I couldn't use this without a few tweaks to make it work. If you are one of the unfortunate few, here's something that could help:
1. Before you buy:
look at the tech specs of this chip and your PC. The chip is a DDR2 DIMM 667 Mhz.
2. It works fine on the Inspiron 6400 - and should work fine on a comparable laptop. Check the manuals to be sure.
3. Before you install:
To be on the safe side make sure your PC is not in stand by or hibernate modes. Take the usual precautions before you replace the Memory module on the laptop. Once you boot up you may see a memory changed screen and the boot process may not proceed any further. In such an event or something similar try the following:
i. make sure the chip is securely placed in it's slot, so we can rule out contact as a problem.
ii. Start the machine up again and this time go into the diagnostics mode or test mode - on the Dell inspiron 6400 - hit the enter key when the DELL logo comes on, F2 and F12 are for BIOS and Boot options. Run all the tests in the diagnostics - it can take a few hours. If you end up with errors, you will receive an error code. Use this to trouble shoot with Dell support if need be. This diagnostics mode is different from that of windows safe mode or your bios settings. When I had this problem I couldn't even get that far. After the test, I booted up the machine and it worked fine. Also play around with different things - reset the memory, remove the battery, remove the HDD, the adapter and use battery only. It may seem silly - but it got my laptop going!
It works fine for sure and it's a good buy to keep your laptop going for another year. I'm gonna switch to SSDs to get another 3 more out of this laptop - why? - just coz... |
